Listen
to part of a lecture in a biology class.
Professor: There are many problems for sea turtles. Right now,
we’ll talk about one of the biggest. Sea turtles are in serious danger because of climate change. For
one, climate change means warmer beach sand. Now, sand temperature determines sea
turtle gender. Warmer sand means fewer males.
So, reproduction will become impossible. Climate change also means higher
ocean water levels. This will flood sea turtle nests. And human activity has already destroyed a lot of nests. When the
remaining nests flood, sea turtles will have few places to go. Finally,
warmer ocean water will affect the food chain in sea turtle habitats. It may be harder to find
prey. There may be more predators. The sea turtles will have to push into new
areas. They’ll be leaving areas where they’re
protected by law. So climate change
really is a serious threat.
